Things to Know
Taiwanese custom requires all guests to give a red envelope (hongbao) to the bridal couple. This tradition symbolizes bestowing happiness, good fortune, and well wishes to the newly married couple. The red envelope should contain at least NTD 2200 or USD 72 per person in your family. The amount should be an even number ending in 0, 2 or 6. Odd numbers as well as 4 and 8 are considered inauspicious in Taiwanese culture and should be avoided. The exact amount that you give is completely up to you, but people typically give more money to close family and friends, especially if they host the banquet in a fancy hotel.
